American Heritage Dictionary, Fifth Edition App Reviews

SHAME. Good product, Bad app developer.

People who are willing to spend $25 for a dictionary app deserve to have it work. Updates for this app are too infrequent and rarely fix the problem. The product has been inoperable for some time now. However, the app is nice, when it works.

TOTAL FAIL

It is SO STUPID of a company to release an update that renders the app totally dysfunctional for so many PAYING users. Disgusted.

Recent update killed the app

The app is completely destroyed by last update. It’s been great, and now it’s worse than nothing, because all my ‘bookmarks’ are gone. Never mind $ 25 - I regret my collection of exotic words turning into dust.

Pathetic

Five days and still broken? Get with it! We all paid dearly for this app.

App destroyed!

This was a wonderful app and my preferred dictionary until the latest update rendered it useless on my iPad Air running iOS 9.0.2. I paid a good deal of money for this app. Both Apple and the developer need to coordinate more closely to make sure apps and their updates meet Apple standards. To make matters worse, there is no way to contact the developer directly.

Busted, broken, and all boogered up

Agree with the others. The update I downloaded today broke the dictionary completely. Fix please.

Will this be fixed?

Very disappointed that update ruined the app.

Works again (iOS 9.1)—love this

So happy to have this working again in iOS 9.1. I find it indispensable, and generally a pleasure to use.

Immediate crash

The new updated version crashes immediately on iPhone 6 running iOS 9.0.2. The developer should have done the basic test before publishing this new version. Version 6.5.1 they published on 10/22/15 has the immediate crash issue resolved. But no sound is generated when the speaker icon is pressed to hear the pronunciation.

6.5.1 fixed the issues.

The latest update fixed the fail on launch problem. This is my favorite dictionary app.

Back to the best

After latest update, works well again. Best English dictionary App!

Dictionary and Flashcards working great under iOS 9.1

I am very happy to have my favorite dictionary, AHD5, working perfectly on my iPad, iPhone and iPod touch again! Thank you, Apple, for iOS 9.1 and to the dictionarys developers for AHD5 version 6.5.1! My iPad workflow is running smoothly again. And all 571 Bookmarks that I had made for the Flashcard function are still there for me to study again! This is easily the most useful dictionary Ive got. Every student should get it just for the flashcards. By the way, searching for "AHD5" in the App Store only points to the Free version of this app, which is loaded with negative reviews at the moment, unlike this Paid version. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt might want to correct that.

App Crashes

The latest update fixed the crash problem.

Audio wont workafter 10/23 update

The app works now - thats progress - but the audio appears to be broken after this latest fix. No sound on my iPhone or iPad.

Broken

I give up. Response from customer support for your reference. Hello, Thank you for your email. I will try to get you back up and running again as soon as possible. There are two versions of this AHD5 app and they each require a different activation method. So that I give you the right advice, please answer the following questions. How did you originally buy the app - was it from in-app purchase or from activation from the previous app or coupon? If you used a coupon - do you still have the activation code that was emailed to you? Was it AHD4 or AHD5 that you bought originally? If you have the app running on any of your devices right now, what was the full name and version number of the app? Open it up and go to About ->E-Mail support and the version number and name of the app will be on the mail that opens. When was it originally purchased? Do you still have the email receipt or purchase order so I can see what is happening on your end. Regards, Tracey Northcott Enfour, Inc.

Bug and bug

It doesnt work on iphone 6 with ios 9.1 and I cant listen to audio, I think it took long time to fix the problems so remove the bug please quickly, please

Cynical behavior by developers?

Frankly, placing an alternative version of the same exact edition in the App Store (with the old one named "5th Edition" and this one named "Fifth Edition") seems like a cynical attempt to flee the one-star reviews for the other entry. Also, because I had no choice but to press a "Buy" button to download this almost-working version, I am steeling myself for yet another charge — for an app that was already the most expensive on my entire device. Developers for other apps, including some of the most sophisticated, have been able to release updates in a timely way, so I completely fail to understand apologists who defend those developers!

Terrible issues lasting forever

Update: First, it took -=enormous=- amount of time to fix the iOS9 crashes, now - there is no sound. How long??? It is permanently one star - there is way too many problems, the developer is inresponsive, greedy and completely ignores the issues. Once, advertisements in the app - now disappeared. Every OS upgrade - huge problems lasting forever (there are plenty of time to fix it even before release). Now - no sound! How hard was it just to test it before releasing the update? How hard? Update: I look into the app again, and the advertisements seem to disappear. They also disappeared from another app by the same developer, Rogets Thesaurus. I really like this app; however I would not give it five stars again, after the incident with advertisements, when they suddenly appeared below the settings menu. Otherwise it is a useful app, and quite ergonomically designed.

Where is the QC?

This used to be my favorite dictionary app., but this latest update screwed it up. What happened to the asterisk shortcut to clear out the search box? What happened to the audible pronunciation of words that didnt need an internet connection? Now when I tap the pronounce icon, I hear nothing. Why cant programmers enhance their creations without f#@!&ing up other things??!! Its bad enough when Apple does this with their IOS, but I expect better from app developers since their focus should be more narrow. And if Apple is reading this: When are you fixing movie art not consistently appearing??!! And what about fixing the displaying of movie metadata so I can know whats on an alternate audio track instead of the stupidly generic English??!! This hasnt worked since IOS 6.

Fantastic!

Was my worst-performing app until I finally deleted it. Tech support is awful. Just stop trying to fix in midstream. Stay away!
